Personality & Traits

General Overview Magnus is an out-going, friendly and intelligent man, having built a stable career in politics and diplomacy. He prefers a relaxed and pleasant demeanour, always the one to keep a level head. He has been known to disarm many heated arguments with his big smile and affable personality. He was known as the Smooth Dane in the Academy.

He is also deeply passionate about Federation ideals and a strong moral compass he inherited from his grandmother and mother. Family means the most to Magnus; they are his inspiration, motivation, and grounding.

He is ambitious though would be the last to admit it, and takes his position very seriously despite his relaxed approach. Having gained an appointment in the Federation's Executive Council, he is learning to adjust to galaxy-wide view instead of a regional focus, and coming to terms with life in the Palais.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths
A latent Betazoid empathetic ability. Though untrained, it can help him give him a general sense of a person's emotions.

An intelligent, considered mind. He approaches most discussions as a game of chess - which he dislikes losing.

A relaxed and calm approach, which helps him to keep his cool and disarm opposition. He can smile while others shout, and break the ice with confidence.

A strong family bond keeps him grounded and inspired. His big, eclectic family is a contining source of pride and encouragement.

Weaknesses
He enjoys a good-hearted discussion but will rile with passion for his morals, speaking emphatically and emotionally when challenged. It can be hard to stop when he gets started.

He prefers dealing with people over technology, real cooked food over synthesized creations, handcrafted clothes over replicated, and live music over recordings. This can seem antiquated and has lead to accusations of "snobbery".

He can seem like he's always trying to "win" a discussion, which makes it hard for others to trust him. He can come across as a politican and diplomat even in social settings.

He is privately ambitious and though his goal will always be to improve the Federation, he now has an eye on progressing through Government.
Ambitions To make the Department of the Exterior and Federation Diplomatic Corps a more functional, prepared, and productive arm of the Federation's operations.

To raise a significant profile for himself to potentially run for President in the future.
Hobbies & Interests Running on the beach, chess, loud music, painted arts, and home cooked food. He enjoys wearing civilian clothes as often as possible and prefers a relaxed but stylish wardrobe.

Personal History Born in Copenhagen, Earth in 2352, Magnus is the youngest child of Spencer and Brigitte Temple, and brother to Nycolas. His father, a doctor in Starfleet, took an extended leave of absence to raise the young family in Denmark. Here they enjoyed a relaxed, fun-filled life in the artisan, historical city, and so that their mother, a career politician, could continue to work as an European and Federation leader.

When they were old enough, Magnus and Nyx would visit their grandparents on Betazed, which Magnus enjoyed thoroughly. He loved travelling in Star Fleet vessels and especially seeing his warm, loud, energetic grandmother. She instilled upon the young boy a joyful, compassionate outlook on life, as well as basic training for empathic ability. She passed when Magnus was 10 and he vowed to always live up to her image.

As Magnus’ mother Brigitte was a political leader and elected States Minister of Denmark in 2364, young Magnus was often in the halls of Parliament, asking far too many questions and making a clear impression of the diplomat and politician he himself would become. Magnus was a keen observer during this time, proud and encouraged by his mother’s ideals of humanitarianism and progressive politics; there’s even archival footage of an interview Magnus did with the European News Service when he was 11 where he declared he would become Federation President one day.

After his father was posted to a Federation colony to assist with a medical research project, and his mother on assignment for the UFP, Magnus and Nycolas were sent to live with his grandfather, retired Rear Admiral William Temple, who was now living in the southern United States after the passing of his wife. The Admiral also had custody of Magnus’ wayward cousin Jesse, and the three boys loved fishing in the bayous of New Orleans, and listening to their granddad’s war stories of fighting against the Borg and the Gorn. It was the only time Magnus heard the unfiltered accounts of Starfleet’s heroics; although he always insisted a diplomatic approach would have been more useful, he was amazed by his grandfather’s years of service.

Magnus would return to Europe at age 15, where he completed his secondary schooling in Paris. Although he had his choice of careers, Magnus had decided to apply for the Starfleet Academy and follow his father and grandfather’s footsteps into active service. He was accepted, due in part to his family lineage but also his strong interview abilities, and began the Academy in 2370. Magnus chose to major in Diplomacy, with a minor in Alien Languages. He also joined the cadet’s Student Representative Council and the Academy newspaper. He was elected as the SRC Chair in his third year, as he was known as an organiser and passionate campaigner. He also wrote a popular column regarding Academy society events. In his final year, he was invited to address the United Federation of Planets Diplomatic Corp Annual Delegation in San Francisco, Earth, where he gave a speech regarding the power of words over photon torpedoes.

He graduated with honours in 2374. Due to his impressive networking, extra-curricular activities, and hard work, he was selected as a Junior Envoy within Star Fleet HQ, shadowing several chief diplomats. Following this, he took several different postings throughout Federation territories, gaining experience and skills as a focused and professional Diplomat. He rose through the ranks of Envoy to Aide and then Diplomatic Officer during this time. He focused primarily on Alpha Quadrant operations, where he dealt with the Cardassians and Romulans very frequently, including negotiations within the deeply tempestuous Neutral Zone.

After many years working abroad, Magnus missed his family and home. In 2380, Magnus transferred from Starfleet to work as a consultant during the election of then-States Minister of Denmark, coming home to Copenhagen and local government. Though he was prompted by his parents to run for office himself, he joined the Federation Office of Trade, and liaised with the Federation Bureau of Alpha Quadrant Affairs, which later gained him a position as Advisor to the Secretary to the Exterior. He was seen as potential future leader, much like his mother, but some believed he needed more experience and more time with Starfleet operations in front-line service.

Knowing this, Magnus resolved to rejoin active service in 2386. He used his political skills to advance his resume, now focused on rising through the UFP Diplo Corp. He gained the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade at Federation marine base Camp Kovar, before being reassigned to the USS Vanguard as Chief Diplomatic Officer. During this time, he remained a Liaison to the Department of the Exterior and Bureau of Alpha Quadrant Affairs, and addressed the Federation Membership Committee on minor states, and continued to assist with the development of Federation colonies in the Neutral Zone.

When the Vanguard was moved to the Gamma Quadrant, Magnus chose to stay in the northern Alpha Quadrant region with the 72nd Fleet and was assigned to Deep Space 12 as Federation Ambassador, working hard to establish strong relations with the Cardassians and Romulans. Following a successful period on DS12, Magnus felt ready to effect change from a higher level, and be the one making the decisions instead of always following them.

After the Federation President election of 2388, a coveted position within the new Cabinet became available, Secretary of the Exterior. Thanks to his life-long development of connections with the Diplo Corps and Federation departments (and the none-too-subtle campaigning by his mother), Magnus successfully lobbied for appointment of the new position. Able to capitalise on his experience and pleasant personality, he gained approval through Federation Council during a long confirmation process and became one of the first Cabinet positions filled. Magnus saw this as his clear chance to further his career and gain momentum towards a permanent political path towards the top of the Federation.
